Healing

How does it happen?

I love it when that “Aahh” moment happens for a client. I know there has been a true shift in thinking and the healing has begun. I’ve witnessed it many times in both children and adults.

After successfully completing EMDR, one client who had endured years of childhood abuse reflected, “I don’t know why that bothers me so much.”

A second client who had lost her father as a child determined that she would never feel that sadness again – a decision that set her up on a path of self-destruction and suicidal behavior. Using a cognitive approach, she realized the why for her behavior, and then – she was able to change.

Regardless of the approach, healing happens.

The framework I use is Transactional Analysis (TA), and I add other therapies such as EMDR and DBT to it.

TA accepts the assumption that we have three ego states: parent, adult, and child. The parent ego state provides permission and protection. Until you can provide these for yourself, the therapist will step in and provide the protection and permission.

To heal, you need a strong, confident therapist who knows how to handle your pain and protect you.

The adult ego state provides you with facts and information. Sometimes the adult has poor information, so the therapist will step in and provide the protection and permission.

But healing doesn’t happen until the child ego state buys into it all.

This is where the “Aahh” happens.

Your eyes open for the first time; you can truly see, and the weight that’s been holding you down falls away.

The world looks brighter.

When I see the shift, it gives me goosebumps, and I want to do a happy dance.

Healing has begun for my client. Real long-lasting healing – not a band-aid or a coping skill to deal with the problem but true healing.

This is why I started Shreveport Therapy.
